Avoiding Mergers

This shows a  border merger because the picture cuts off kids in the left and right side of the image. If the kids were to be seen and weren't cut off they would be avoiding mergers.

This picture i picked shows the rule of Avoiding Mergers because the image is cutting off kids in the left side and the rigth side of the image this shows that they didn't avoid a merger making this image a Border Merger.

farming

This shows framing because the trees form a frame around the picture.

This picture i picked shows the rule of framing because the trees are forming a frame in the lower part  of the image.

Balance

This picture shows balance  because it shows lady liberty balancing and holding her hand up.

This picture i picked shows the rule of balance because the  statue is balancing with her foot bent a little an her hand in the air.

Lines

This picture shows lines because the background is a building and it has lines going starlight down.

This picture i picked shows the rule of lines because the building has lines and it leads the eye to the guy falling.

Rule of Thirds

This picture shows the Rule of thirds because the flag is in the lower right corner of the picture.

This picture i picked meets The  Rule of Thirds because if i were to make lines on the image that broke it apart the flag will be in the lower right corner of the image.

Simplicity

This image shows simplicity because the background is simple( is the sky).

This photo i picked meets the rule of simplicity because the background is blue and there's nothing going on in the background that will grab you attention to that, instead of the burning building.

Elements of Art & Principals of Design in Photography

Elements of Art

Line- Lines are marks made by a pointed tool: brush, pencil, pen, etc. Lines can vary in width, direction, curvature, length, or color.

Shape - Shapes are formed wherever the ends of a continuous line meet. Geometric shapes such as circles, triangles or squares have perfect, uniform measurements and don't often appear in nature. Organic shapes are associated with things from the natural world, like plants and animals.

Color -Color wheels show the primary colors, secondary colors, and the tertiary (intermediate) colors. They also show the relationships between complementary colors across from each other, such as blue and orange; and analogous (similar or related) colors next to each other such as yellow, green, and blue. Black and white may be thought of as colors but, in fact, they are not. White light is the presence of all color; black is the absence of reflected light and therefore the absence of color.

Value (Tone)-Value, or tone, refers to dark and light; the value scale refers to black and white with all gradations of gray in between.  Value contrasts help us to see and understand a two-dimensional work of art.

Form-Form describes objects that are three-dimensional, having
length, width, and height.

Texture -Texture can be rough, bumpy, slick, scratchy, smooth,
silky, soft, prickly--the list is endless.  Texture refers to the surface quality, both simulated and actual, of artwork.

I choose this painting because it has texture and it looks like something that pops out of the paper and it looks like you can touch it

I choose this image because it shows the texture of the tree and the kid is touching it.

Space-Space refers to distances or areas around, between, or within components of a piece. Space can be positive (white or light) or  negative (black or dark), open or closed, shallow or deep, and two-dimensional or three-dimensional.

I choose this image because it shows space between the sticks some look like their far away others look closer

I choose this painting also for the same reason that i choose the image because it shows space between the planets and some look far away and others look closer.

 Principals of Design

Balance-is the comfortable or pleasing arrangement of things in art.  There are three different types of balance: symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial. The human figure is symmetrically balanced; the same on the left and right side. The tree is asymmetrically balanced; its branches are not distributed equally on each side, but their total weight is balanced left and right. The sun is an example of radial balance; all its rays are equal in length from the center.

I choose this image because the rocks are being balanced one on top of the other

I choose this painting because the little girl is balancing on one leg

Contrast-is created by using elements that conflict with one another. Often, contrast is created using complementary colors or extremely light and dark values. Contrast creates interest in a piece and often draws the eye to certain areas. It is used to make a painting look interesting.

I choose this painting because it shows contrast it has complementary colors and has dark values

I choose this image because it shows light and dark values.

Emphasis-Emphasis in the focal area of an artwork gives it importance.  An artist may stress some elements of the design over others. The eye of the viewer will focus on the area of emphasis or center of interest first, then take in the rest of the composition.

I choose this image because it emphasizes on one area and then it takes in the rest of the composition

I choose this painting because it does the same as the image it focuses on one area then it takes in the rest of the composition.

Movement- in an artwork means the artist is taking viewers on a trip through the work by means of lines, edges, shapes, and colors often leading to the focal area.  Movement is a visual flow through the composition. It can be the suggestion of motion in a design as you move from object to object by way of placement and position.  Directional movement can be created with a value pattern. It is with the placement of dark and light areas that you can move your attention through the format.

I choose this painting because the dog is in movement he it shakeing and you can see it.

I choose this image because it also shows movement the guy is riding a bike and the rest looks blurry making it look like its moving.

Pattern-Patterns are made in art when the same shapes or elements are repeated again and again.  Pattern uses the elements of art in planned or random repetitions to enhance surfaces of paintings or sculptures.

I choose this painting because it shows a pattern and it keeps on repeating.

Rhythm- is the repetition of shapes, lines, and forms.  Rhythm is a movement in which some elements recurs regularly.  Like a dance, it will have a flow of objects that will seem to be like the beat of music.
I choose this painting because it shows rhythm theirs a repetition in shapes, lines ,and forms.

The same with this image it shows rhythm with the shapes lines and forms.

Unity- Unity means that all elements in an artwork are in harmony.  Unity brings together a composition with similar units.  For example, if your composition was using wavy lines and organic shapes you would stay with those types of lines and not put in even one geometric shape.

I choose this painting of the ducks because they are united they are together and their similar.

I choose this image because it also shows unity and are similar shapes.

Photo Manipulation Ethics

When photojournalist Photoshop a photo it can cost them their job. This happened to 3 people that tried to Photoshop original images and dint do a good job they got fired and all of their photos were removed by the photo company and on top of that they were fired. So its better for photojournalist to not Photoshop images unless they  want to get fired from their job.

I think this picture is unethical because the picture looks like a cartoon it look fake especially the solider and the colors make them look fake and like a cartoon .

I think these tow picture are not unethical because they look real and it looks like they used both of this pictures and got parts from each of them to create the one above.

National Geographic Warm-Up

This is my favorite picture because i like the different shades of colors and i like the effect the sand had  when it was thrown in the air and got struck by the  rays of the sun. I also like the shape of the canyon and  like how they captured the image from the angle that they did it from.

I would take a picture of  dolphins because i like dolphins and i would like to swim with them

40 Greatest Photos Ever

The thing that made me pick this photo is that i like the colors of it and i like the little boys face expression. What made me gravitate to this picture was the colors and how the marine and the kid are dressed. I think this picture made the cut in the top 40 because of the story behind it and because of how well the image was captured.
By: Aron Thompson

The thing that made me pick this picture was how the little kid just wanted to go with his dad and how the dad reaches out for him. What made me gravitate to this picture is that its an old picture a white and black picture and i also liked the way the soldiers are lined up. I think this picture made the cut in the top 40 because it stands out , the kid and the dad stand out from the whole group.
By: Claude P. Dettloff

The thing that made me pick this picture is that  its a sad picture. What made me gravitate to this picture was how the lady is pastured on the ground ,her face expression and how she is hugging the child. I think this picture made the cut in the top 40 because others can relate to this picture.

Great Black And White Part 2

Julia Margret Cameron was born in Calcutta in 1815. Julia was the fourth of seven sisters and received much of her education in France and England before recruiting to Calcutta. In 1836 she traveled to Cape Town where she met Sir John Herschel the scientist and astronomer, he supported her work. He was probably the first to introduce her to photographic process and is the subject of some of her best known portraits.
In 1837 she met Charles Hay Cameron , whom she married in Calcutta in 1838. He was an important figure in law reform and education in India, and twenty years her senior . For the next ten years the Camerons lived in India and were highly regarded and active in colonial politics and society. Julia was kept busy as a hostess, manger of the household and as a mother.

In 1863, when Julia was 48 years old , her daughter gave her a camera as a present , thereby starting her career as a photographer . Her motivation was to arrest all beauty that came before her. This image was one of her first success .She created this image for her close friend. The painter George Fredrick Watts, she titled this photograph sadness this image was actually a study of the Shakespearean actress, Ellen Terry.

In 1863 she found her First success which was photography  and from that point forward she worked tirelessly photographing and composing subjects, producing prints, and promoting and distributing her works as widely as possible.

Julia's photographic career was short, spanning eleven years of her life from 1864-1875. Although her style was not widely appreciated in her own day , her work had an impact on modern photographers, especially her closely cropped portraits .

Camer parts

Aperture- It refers to an adjustable opening in your camera lens that is able to limit the amount of light passing through the lens and hitting the camera sensor.

Shutter- A device that opens and closes to expose the film in a camera.

Exposure- Is the amount of light allowed to fall on each area unit of a photographic medium During the process of taking a photograph.

Depth of Field- refers to the range of distance that appears acceptably sharp.

F-stop- Is generally the nation used to indicate the size  of the diagram opening , or aperture , in a camera

Focal Length- Focal length inst a measure of how long or short a lens is physically, but the distance in millimeters from the optical center of a lens to the imagining sensor when the lens is focused at infinity.

Flash button- The flash button is the button that provides lightfor you when youm are taking a picture in a place where the lighting is not good or in a place where theres no lighting  at all

Power switch- The power switch is for turning the camera on or off

Shutter button- The shutter button opens to capture a picture then closes allowing an expo user time as determined by the shutter speed.

Camera History

                                      "The Camera"

The effect camera also known as the camera obscura was the first camera the hole acted like a lens, focusing and projecting ligligtht onto the wall of the dark chamber.

In the 17th century Isaac Newton and Christian Huygens helped men get a step closer to creating the modern camera by perfecting the understanding of optics and the process of making high quality glass lenses.

The parts were a glass lens ,a dark box, and film that created the first successful photograph.

What modern digital cameras have in common with Niepce's camera is that they work the same light passes through the lens, into the camera, and exposes the film, and the results end up being the same you get a photograph.

Digital Cameras capture images with an electronic sensor called a CCD.

                                  "Camera Modes"

Auto or program mode is the default for most modern cameras . The photographer can simply aim, press the button, and almost be guaranteed a great image.

Portrait mode is used to attempt to blur out the background, camera will try to use the fastest available lens setting(aperture).

Sports mode is used to freeze motion, camera will use the highest shutter possible.

                                       "The Half Press"

You should do  a half press on the trigger button because its helpful in many ways gives faster camera response time , more control over focus , and encourages better composition.

                                       "Controlling Flash"

Disable flash- No flash You will use it when there is already  light  available during the capturing of pictures

Auto flash - Flash on You will use it when there is no light during the capturing of a photograph

                             "Introduction to Exposure"

If there is too much light the picture will be washed out and if there is not enough light the picture will be too dark.

                                 "The Universal Stop"

A stop is used in every aspect of a photography to represent a relative change in the brightness of light.

Its f4 if theres is 2 suns
Its f8 if its 4 suns

                             "Shutters and Aperture"

Longer shutter speed = more light

Shorter shutter speed= Less light

The aperture is like a pupil. YOu can control the aperture by setting the Aperture opening also known as an F-stop.

You increase it by opening it up to let light trough.

Masters of Black And White Photography

Manuel Alvarez Bravo - Laughing Mannequins (1930)

This is a good picture of black and white because the mannequins look real if u look at the picture from far away.

Julia Margret- Sadness (1864)

I like this picture because of how the girl is dressed she is wearing something different from old days and  her facial expression shows sadness and the name goes perfectly with the picture.

First Photo-- Best and Worst

Good Picture

I think this is a good picture that i took because first of all you can see his face , the picture came out clear, and the picture didn't come out blurry. The things that i did to make it a good picture was that first of all i made sure that he was facing the camera and that he dint move for at lest 3 seconds for me to be able to take a clear picture and not a blurry one.

Bad Picture

I think this is a bad picture because you can't see his face at all he is facing away from the camera . The things that i did for this picture to be bad was that i didn't capture his face and i only captured his body.
